In 1949 Pearl Primus - dancer, anthropologist, and Black woman - received a grant to study dance in Africa. She continued her research throughout the Caribbean and the Jim Crow South. Award winning choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar's two-part masterpiece traces her footsteps, exploring the blending and sustaining of culture in all its complexity, and capturing the depths of both pain and joy that Primus observed and recorded in her diaries.
